Registrations received after the Early Bird deadline but before September 1 receive a $20 discount off their first payment.
MYC is a year long curriculum, not a lesson-by-lesson program. By registering for classes, you are making a commitment to continue for the entire year. Classes are small and your space is saved for you - in many cases another child has been turned away. For this reason, fees are non-refundable (unless the studio cancels a program).
If you are unsure about committing to the entire year, please talk to me before you register. Depending on the situation, it may be possible to make an exception if I am informed in advance.
The standard MYC class size is 4-6 students. Exceptions may be made in special situations.
Classes with insufficient registration may be subject to cancellation.
Sunshine 2/Sunbeams 2: If not enough children are registered by the Early Bird deadline, the class will be put into Sunbeams 1 or Moonbeams 1, respectively. These level 1 programs offer some review at the beginning (allowing new students to join in) but will move more quickly and finish at the same place as the equivalent level 2 program.
Classes are 1 hour long, once per week.

Practice
Daily home practice (minimum 5 days per week) with parental supervision is required. Only a short time is needed each day, but regular daily practice is essential to keep children motivated and ready for the new concepts that are presented at every class.
Younger students need parents to sit with them and be completely involved in their practice. As students mature, they may begin to practice more independently, but throughout the MYC program at least some level of parental involvement will be needed.
Practicing includes more than just playing the piano. It should be fun and engaging! Your teacher will provide you with all the information you need by the first class.
This is approximately how much time will be needed each day:
Motivation/Progress
It is normal for children's interest in music learning to fluctuate. It is also normal for children to need to be told to practice every day.
If you as a parent are confident that music learning is good for your child, that attitude will influence your child to be interested and motivated. If you are constantly unsure and looking for indications as to whether your child is interested, very often your child can sense that and will be more likely to give up when they face a challenge.
As I a teacher, I am not always aware of it when a student is struggling with practice at home. Please do not hesitate to contact me immediately if you are facing challenges with practice! Usually we can make positive changes before the issue becomes a major problem.
Please do not compare your child to other children in the class. In a group setting, children will have different strengths and weaknesses, and will progress at different rates in different areas. Some strengths and weaknesses are more apparent than others. If you feel the material being assigned is too difficult or too easy for your child, please discuss this with me. There is room for a wide range of abilities in a single class, and often the practice assignment can be made easier or more challenging, while still covering the necessary concepts.
In some cases, a child may benefit from being held back or accelerated a level. At registration time, I will let you know if I feel another level would be more appropriate for your child. If you would like to make a change, please ask me about this option.
Communication
I am eager to stay in touch! Please call or e-mail during the week with any questions or concerns you may have, or we can set up an appointment outside of class time. Please do not discuss questions or concerns about your child's progress in front of your child.
A Final Word
The benefits of studying music are well documented. In addition to the pleasure of creating beautiful sound, learning to play an instrument helps to develop motor skills and good memory. Music also teaches children self-discipline, concentration and co-operation. It helps them with abstract thinking and builds their power of attention. They learn to work out detailed solutions and how to organise their time to meet deadlines. In the process, they learn to work and think independently. The skills acquired through the discipline of learning to play a musical instrument prove a major factor in the student’s success in all aspects of life. You parents are doing a good thing for your children! Thank you for choosing Music for Young Children. I look forward to spending this music year with you and your child!
