  • Registration Fee
    • There is a registration fee of $50, for new students and for returning students registering for the new school year.
      • Students who are continuing lessons through July & August are not required to re-register but will be continued month-to-month.
      • Students who will be taking the summer off lessons are required to register and pay a registration fee in order to hold a place in the teaching schedule for the fall.
  • 2020-21 Private Lesson Tuition Rates
    • Lessons with Elizabeth are $48/hour. This typically translates to $96/month for 30 min lessons, $144/month for 45 minute lessons, and $192/month for 60 minute lessons (it will vary depending on the number of lessons in each month).
    • Lessons with Sarah are charged at $38/hour. This typically translates to $76/month for 30 min lessons or $114/month for 45 minute lessons.
    • Please note: Elizabeth and Sarah may sometimes substitute teach for each other. We will attempt to provide advance notice but this may not always be possible (e.g. if your regular teacher is unexpectedly sick). You will be charged the rate for whichever teacher you are actually seeing, so this may result in a slight increase/decrease in your monthly bill.

Trial Period (New Students)

New students will have a trial period of 4 lessons before making a commitment to ongoing lessons. After the trial period, students may decide whether or not to continue lessons. Once a commitment to ongoing lessons has been made, the payment policy and cancellation policy will apply, as described below.

Payment Policy

Payments are made by credit card, and are billed monthly. Students must have a credit card saved on file, which will be billed automatically each month. Payment for each month will be charged 3 weeks prior to the beginning of each month, e.g. you will pay for your January lessons on December 11.

Please note there is a $20 late fee for payments 7 days overdue.

Cancellation/Withdrawal Policy

Students are typically expected to continue lessons for the duration of a full school year; however this is not required.

Payments which have already cleared will not be refunded. However, if adequate advance notice is given, there is no penalty for withdrawals at any time (see payment schedule above).

Schedule

Private Lessons are scheduled weekly year-round, except:

  • Labour Day

  • Thanksgiving Day

  • Christmas: We will take 2 weeks off over the Christmas holidays

  • Family Day

  • March Break: No lessons Monday - Saturday

  • Good Friday

  • Victoria Day

  • Canada Day

Please note that lessons WILL be held on school PD days and any other holidays not mentioned above.

Summer:

  • Students are strongly encouraged to take lessons through at least part of the summer; however this is not required.
  • The schedule is flexible during July and August. You must cancel the lesson on the calendar at least 2 weeks in advance of each absence or you will be charged (and receive a make-up credit as usual; see below).
  • Students who take at least 4 paid lessons during the summer will not be required to register or pay a registration fee for the fall.

Missed Lessons

Teacher Cancellations

If the studio cancels a lesson, it will be rescheduled for a mutually convenient time. If this is impossible, you will not be charged for that lesson.

Bad Weather

Everyone has different vehicles, different distances to drive, and different comfort levels driving in bad weather. Please use your own judgment about whether it is safe to drive. If you decide to stay home, we can do a lesson at the regular time online.

Student Cancellations

If the student is unable to attend a lesson, you will still be charged, but may receive a make-up credit which you can use to schedule a free make-up lesson when an opening is available. (Please note that you must cancel your attendance via the online calendar if you wish to receive a make-up credit.) Alternatively you can give the lesson time to a family member or friend (must be approved by the teacher if they are not a currently enrolled student).

It is your responsibility to log in to the website and sign up for a make-up lesson on the calendar.

  • When you sign up for a make-up lesson, it is fine to have 2 lessons in one week (a make-up lesson and a regular lesson). There is always more valuable work we can do to work on skills, even if the second lesson is simply a supervised practice session!
  • You may sign up for a make-up lesson with either Elizabeth or Sarah; it doesn't matter which is your regular teacher. No financial adjustments will be made if you take your make-up lesson with a different teacher than you normally see.

Any cancelled lessons turn into make-up slots for other students to use. Therefore, as a courtesy to other students, it is suggested that you make your cancellations as far in advance as possible.

Extended Student Absences (during the school year)

If the student will be absent from lessons for an extended period of time (3 or more weeks in a row) there are three options:

  1. No change from the regular policy: pay for the lessons and make them up (as explained above).
  2. Pay nothing, but risk losing your spot in the teaching schedule. The teacher must be informed of the extended absence before the billing cycle for the missed lessons.
  3. Pay 50% to hold your spot, but there will be no make-up lessons.

Keyboard/Piano

Students are expected to have a quality instrument for practice. An acoustic piano is strongly recommended, but a full-size keyboard (88 weighted keys) with piano-style pedals will suffice for lower levels. Beginners may use a keyboard with 61 full size, touch sensitive keys. Acoustic pianos must be tuned annually or at least every two years.

Books

Usually the studio will purchase books for students; however sometimes students will be asked to purchase their own books. When the studio purchases books for you, the amount will be added to your next invoice.

Practice

Students are expected to practice at home at least 5 days per week in order to continue progressing and getting the most out of their piano lessons. Practicing is not just about playing through the pieces but should include stopping to work on particular goals as specified by the teacher.

Progress

In private lessons, each student has the opportunity to progress at his own pace. Our goal is to keep each student at a level where he is challenged but not overwhelmed. While some students may progress from grade to grade every year, others may require a slower or faster pace.

Payments which have already cleared will not be refunded. However, if adequate advance notice is given, there is no penalty for withdrawals at any time (see payment schedule above).

Schedule

Lessons are scheduled weekly year-round, except:

- Christmas: We will take 2 weeks off over the Christmas holidays.

- Statutory holidays: There will be no lessons on statutory holidays (Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day). However lessons WILL be held on school PD days and any other holidays not mentioned above.

- March break: It will be assumed that most adults will be taking lessons, but that children and adults who have school-aged children, will not be taking lessons. If you wish to take exception to this, I must be informed at least 2 weeks in advance.

- Summer: Lessons are flexible for July & August. If you are taking some time off I need to be notifed 2 weeks in advance of each abscence or you will be charged (and receive a make-up credit, as usual; see below). If you choose to take off the entire two months, pre-payment for September is required to hold your place for the fall.

Missed Lessons

Teacher Cancellations

If the teacher cancels a lesson, it will be rescheduled for a mutually convenient time. If rescheduling is impossible, your account will be credited.

Student Cancellations

If the student is unable to attend a lesson for any reason, there are a few ways to make it up:

  • Give the lesson to a family member or friend.
  • Schedule a make-up lesson when a make-up slot becomes available. It is the student's responsibility to sign up for a make-up slot on the website, OR at the beginning of your lesson you can ask the teacher to check for availability for upcoming make ups.
  • For bad weather, mild illness, lack of transportation, etc. we can do a lesson at the regular time over Skype.

Any cancelled lessons turn into make up slots for other students to use. Therefore, as a courtesy to other students, it is suggested that you make your cancellations as far in advance as possible.

When you sign up for a make-up lesson, it is fine to have 2 lessons in one week (a make up lesson and a regular lesson). There is always more valuable work I can do with you to work on skills in more depth than usual; even if the second lesson is simply a supervised practice session, that can sometimes be more helpful than a regular lesson.

Bad Weather

Everyone has different vehicles and different comfort levels driving in bad weather. Please use your own judgment about whether it is safe to drive. If you decide to stay home, you can reschedule for a make-up slot as usual.

Books

Usually the teacher will purchase books for students; however sometimes students will be asked to purchase their own books.

When the teacher purchases books for you, the amount will be invoiced. As a courtesy, I will notify you ahead of time if there is a significant amount coming due.

Students are expected to practice at home at least 5 days per week in order to continue progressing and getting the most out of their piano lessons. Practicing is not just about playing through the pieces but should include stopping to work on particular goals as specified by the teacher.
